Messi's World Cup Worn Shirts - Priceless?

Messi's World Cup Worn Shirts - Priceless?

Football (soccer) shirts purported to have been worn by Lionel Messi from every game of Argentina's triumphant 2022 World Cup were recently offered by a UK auction house.

I observed the bidding for these amazing shirts and saw that the last bid was 50,000 pounds (around $135,000 including buyer's premium), however the auction house's site currently lists the shirts as unsold.

In my view, an auction lot like this one should have come with a witnessed letter signed by Messi himself to provide the authentication needed for such valuable shirts.

Why?  Because hundreds of "additional" match issue shirts appear to be manufactured and offered for sale for players like Messi.  These are normally offered unsigned but do go for a significant $ premium to normal signed shirts offered by leading companies such as Icons who provide outstanding evidence for the authenticity of their items.  Icons are one of the few companies in the world with actual signing deals with players like Lionel Messi.

I recall acquiring and selling all of the Brisbane Roar match-worn shirts from the A League Grand Final held some 14 years ago.  Let me tell you, the shirts truly "ponged" from the sweat of the players and most had "wear marks" such as grass and line stains.  There was no doubt that they were match worn.

In contrast, Messi's shirts look, from the pics provided, to be in new or close-to-new condition.  I don't see the signs of wear that would normally be consistent with match worn football shirts.  That's why I'd want to see the letter from Lionel Messi confirming their provenance.

If they are match worn, they is certainly one heck of a football collectable, perhaps only trumped by a World Cup Winner's medal from Messi or another legend such as Pele.
