Bill Ponsford was an Australian cricketer and record-breaking opening batsman, renowned for twice setting the world record for the highest first-class score (429, then 437) and forming prolific partnerships with Bill Woodfull and Don Bradman, including a 451-run Test stand. A master of spin with immense concentration, he scored 13,819 first-class runs at 65.18 and 2,122 Test runs at 48.22 before retiring in 1934.
